Introduction: Understanding PR - Backlinks - and Traffic

To successfully promote your online business site you will need to understand the goal you are trying to reach and how you will achieve that goal.

What is PR?
PR is the PageRank of your pages in Google. PageRank is a link analysis algorithm that assigns a numerical weighting to each element of a hyperlinked set of documents, such as the World Wide Web, with the purpose of "measuring" its relative importance within the set

The Words
Search Engine Results Page (placement) = SERP
search engine = SE
Search Engine Optimization = SEO
Search Engine Marketing = SEM

Cost Per Click - (Campaigns like Google Adwords) = CPC
Return on Investment = ROI

Keywords
A keyword is the word (or words) which you will optimize your web site for.
If you sell computers your keywords would be words like "computers", "buy computers" , "custom built computers" etc.

Essentially you will be imagining what the people would type into search engines like Google when looking for those products. You are not just trying to make people find your site specifically by name, but rather by the products or services you offer.

There are keyword tools on the Internet that will show you the most common / highest search rate for keywords and keyword phrases. This will show you which words and strings of words: For example if you type "Card" into a keyword tool - it would show that "Business Card" is one of the highest and most often searched words relating to "cards". The higher the search rate for those keywords the more aggressively businesses are competing for them.

Keyword Phrases
Some on the Internet refer to it as 'longtail phrase'. These are lower searched words but you will want to cover all combinations of these keyword phrases to generate the highest potential traffic.

An example for the computer store: - keyword phrases that are searched
"build a computer online"
"compare computers"
"cheap computers
"buy computer"
"computers for sale"
and as many as you can think of.

You see how the keyword "computer" has been entered into full phrases - Those phrases are considered by search engines to be relevant. This is good for you because if your competitor is a multi-million dollar mega-store that is paying $100,000 per month for the keyword "computer" - you can still grab up all those keyword phrases.

Backlinks --------- * High Priority 1 *
Links that point back to your site: back-links
The most important part of ranking your site high in search engines depends on backlinks for PR.

We have broken backlinks into two seperate categories: backlinks for PR and backlinks for traffic. Backlinks for PR contribute directly to your PR score - while backlinks for traffic are surmountable in your efforts to drive traffic to your site.

Backlinks is a world of its own and is probably 90% of the search ranking battle.

Traffic --------- * High Priority 2 *
Another important factor - the amount of (people) traffic that are coming your web site.
* the consistency of this traffic from day to day
* the time people spend on your site
* the number of pages people visit before leaving.

It's more than just bringing people into your site - Once you have traffic coming in you will want to interest them long enough to keep them on the site and/or design your site structure to keep people moving through many pages on your site.
